Building upon the success of the inaugural SMS-R Driver Network Championship in Season 1, and the Logitech and NVIDIA Series in Season 2, Season 3 returned even bigger with an all-star lineup of teams ready to battle it out.
WHAT's in a name?
We have now restructured all our events, leagues, and series, both retrospectively, and for 2017 and beyond...
The 2015 SMS-R Driver Network Championship, 2016 NVIDIA Challenger Series, and 2016 Logitech G Championship Series, along with the 2017 SMS-R Championship Series are henceforth categorised as "Majors". This nomenclature has been chosen to help all players and fans identify which events are the premium ones to take part in and watch; in other words, those with the biggest prize pools, the most prestigious titles, and the highest level of competition. You can find all past and present Major Series grouped in the menu bar above, whilst all other series, cups, and tournaments can be found in the Partner Series category. |
the pinnacle of authenticity
Project CARS is the leading virtual reality racing experience on the market. A launch title for Oculus Rift, and compatible with HTC Vive, the immersion of playing in virtual reality has unquestionably resulted in the quantifiable fact that players are better, faster, and more capable when racing in VR.
Additionally, with powerful graphics cards becoming more commonplace and affordable, there's never been a better time for gamers to experience Project CARS as it was originally envisioned - with HD clarity and blistering frame rates.
Along with the increased grid count, then, it was clear therefore that the PC platform was going to be the most desirable for the SMS-R Championship Series, as it would guarantee the best-looking, and most authentic player and viewer experience yet.

A battle of legends
After three prior Major Series, live events at Dreamhack, Intel Extreme Masters, and Red Bull 5G, Affiliate Leagues, automotive partner tournaments, and ESL-ran cups, Project CARS Esports has been the #1 destination for professional sim racing for a while, attracting and nurturing some of the fastest drivers and teams in the world.
For the 2017 SMS-R Championship Series, the top performers from previous series, events, tournaments, and cups were pre-chosen through a round of seeding, and joined some of the best teams from the larger sim racing and esports world...

THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS
Each team consisted of two drivers, plus one substitute, who could be swapped in throughout the season.
All drivers battled it out for Team Points in a Pro Class whilst also fighting for track space with 15 solo Challenger drivers that won their place via the ESL Go4 Cups each week. Those drivers earned individual Challenger Points.

For those that followed the team-based action in the LGCS and NCS in 2016, and the multi-class format of the current ESL European Championship, this new format provides the best of both worlds - a multi-class 29-player grid combining LMP2 and GT3 cars and also the elite level of team-based competition with the grass roots passion of rising stars and free agents. It's the perfect arena to find the world's fastest gamers, whilst also providing a platform for newcomers to showcase their skills and potentially get picked up by the pros. - Andy Tudor, Creative Director
